10 Criminally Underrated Comic Book Video Games You Must Play

1. Transformers: War For / Fall Of Cybertron

Like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it may surprise some people to learn that the Transformers started out life as a comic book too. Granted, they were developed in conjunction with Hasbro and Takara, but the entire lore behind the series was invented by Marvel's Bob Budiansky, with industry legend Dennis O'Neil even coming up with the name for Optimus Prime.

Transformers is of course one of the most successful toylines of all time, but success doesn't always mean quality. The Robots in Disguise have suffered more than a couple of duff adaptations over the years, including the Bay films, but also in video games.

Which is why it was such an amazing surprise when High Moon came along, gathered up all the Autobots and Decepticons, and delivered one of the all time great comic book video games in 2010's Transformers: War for Cybertron. Oh, and then they followed that up with another stellar title in Fall of Cybertron, which added the Dinobots, which also automatically makes it the best thing ever.

High Moon don't get nearly enough praise for what they did on the Cybertron titles. They're both games you can tell were made with a great deal of love and care, by fans of the original cartoon and the toys that accompanied it. The fact they never got the chance to finish the series by taking it to Earth is one of Activision's biggest crimes, and the fact the studio is stuck on Call of Duty only adds further insult to injury.

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
