10 Critically-Acclaimed Video Games That BOMBED
7. The Evil Within 2 (PS4, XBOX ONE)
This entry is a bit of a strange one, as the sales figures don't tell the whole story - so whether or not this truly belongs here is a mystery to all but the lovely folks at Bethesda.
Survival horror games are typically considered to be tough sellers, comparatively. Horror is usually an adult genre, and not everyone enjoys the pant-ruining gameplay of hiding inside a cupboard until a haunting figure wearing a severed head as a hat leaves to growl at a different patch of darkness.
That said, The Evil Within boasted the notable presence of Shinji Mikami, the father of Resident Evil, and saw modest success alongside a fair critical reception.
When its sequel released and promised to address a lot of the issues players had with the original (including a bizarre aspect ratio and too much focus on trial-and-error chases/battles), sales appeared to see a deserved healthy spike shortly after launch, alongside some much-improved review scores from gaming outlets.
However, sales halted far sooner than analysts had predicted; The Evil Within 2 appeared to only reach a quarter of the sales of the original in the first week, and many assumed this was due to the game's last-minute announcement and subsequent release.
The Evil Within 2's figures may be significantly twisted, as this was around the time digital sales started truly exploding. Tango Gameworks concluded that, as previously-inconsequential digital sales hadn't been counted alongside the physical, digital sales may have made up a far higher percentage than they had initially anticipated.
Whilst they did not confirm if this was the case, seeing digital sales trends skew ever further into the majority, we can assume they were correct.
