10 Critically Reviled Video Game Movies (That Really Aren't THAT Bad)
1. Tomb Raider (2018)
Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer Score: 52%
Critics Consensus: "Tomb Raider reboots the franchise with a more grounded approach and a star who's clearly more than up to the task -- neither of which are well served by an uninspired origin story."
After nearly two decades in development hell, the third Tomb Raider film came along in the form of a complete reboot - one that also happened to be based on the 2013 critically-acclaimed reboot of the video game franchise. Not as reviled as the others on this list, but by no means the darling it was hoped to be, this one didn't exactly shatter expectations in the way that the game did, but it still made for an entertaining watch that successfully managed to reboot the film franchise.
While fans of the more traditional Tomb Raider may not have taken too kindly to the more grounded beginnings for Lara (a.k.a. no guns), the film itself did a solid job setting up an environment in which the protagonist could evolve into the survivor we ultimately knew her to be. On top of that, Alicia Vikander silenced those critics by turning in a fantastic performance, while the story was gripping enough (albeit a little predictable) to keep us invested. And the team behind it deserve extra kudos for successfully installing game-like puzzle sequences that didn't come off as contrived.
Does it go through the motions on occasion? Sure, but it's one of the better video game flicks that will hopefully lead to an even better sequel. Definitely worth your time.
