10 Cruel Tricks Video Games Played On Co-Op Players

6. Boost Mode Lets Players Help (Or Troll) Their Friends - New Super Mario Bros. U

A Way Out Ending
Nintendo

New Super Mario Bros. U introduced one of the most brilliantly innovative co-op multiplayer features in the history of the Mario franchise, with the fantastically creative Boost Mode.

In addition to four players playing the game like a typical co-op Mario platformer, Boost Mode allowed a fifth player to use the Wii U gamepad to manipulate gameplay on-the-fly.

In theory this would allow the omniscient fifth player to spawn blocks that helped players advance while also disabling enemies, but in reality many took this opportunity to screw with their friends instead.

The fifth player could spawn blocks to block paths, prevent teammates from picking up power-ups, and even manipulate interactive parts of the environment to work against the other players' movements.

Hilariously, Nintendo came up with this mode to encourage a different kind of co-operative play, yet they overlooked the major potential for trolling, much to the chagrin of those simply trying to make it to the end of a level.

Sadly Boost Mode was removed for the 2019 Nintendo Switch re-release due to the console's lack of a dedicated gamepad.
