10 Cruel Tricks Video Games Played On FPS Players

8. GLaDOS Disintegrates The Companion Cube - Portal 2

The Portal games saw Valve relish screwing with the player through their interactions with the malevolent, deranged supercomputer GLaDOS. And in the second game, GLaDOS' cruelty perhaps reaches its agonising apex in Test Chamber 7.

In this chamber, players are reacquainted with their beloved Weighted Companion Cubes from the first game, but it's a short-lived honeymoon given that GLaDOS quickly makes pains to ruin your day.

Throughout the level GLaDOS continually disintegrates the cubes before your very eyes. She then warns you that the emancipation grill at the end of the level will obliterate any cubes you try to smuggle out, but also notes that the grill is broken.

And so, players will naturally grab a cube and attempt to transport it out of the chamber past the broken grill, only for the cube to suddenly disintegrate.

As ever, GLaDOS was lying to you about the grill being broken, and to rub salt in the wound, she says:

"I think that one was about to say 'I love you.' They ARE sentient, of course. We just have a LOT of them."

And like that, everybody playing just felt like total crap. Thanks, Valve.
