6. Take Your Time & The Hostages Die - Deus Ex: Human Revolution

The joy of video games often lies in the ability to explore their vast environments to your heart's content, yet in the case of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, that was anything but true.

In the opening level "Back in the Saddle," you have to exit Sarif Industries HQ and deal with a delicate hostage negotiation, though you're first allowed to take an amble through the office's lobby if you like.

It's a gorgeously rendered environment with a lot to take in, so you couldn't be blamed for stopping for a moment. But if you take too many moments here - that is, 15 minutes or more - in the next mission you'll be told that the hostages have died.

Now, the game does admittedly warn you to not hang around Sarif for too long, but it's also fair to say that many players simply assumed this was a canned remark rather than something actively tied to an in-game timer - especially as the Sarif interior looks so damn cool.

To make things even worse, you return to the lobby later in the game, meaning you could've just waited to take a look around until after the hostages were saved. But of course, hindsight is 20:20 and nobody knows this on a first playthrough.
