10 Cruel Tricks Video Games Played On Wrestling Fans
2. Releasing A Wrestling Game Without A Wrestling Ring - WCW Backstage Assault
There's perhaps no wrestling game concept in history as ill-advised and downright deranged as WCW Backstage Assault - for WCW's final video game prior to their acquisition by WWE, EA decided to make a wrestling game with no wrestling ring.
To be a fly on the wall when somebody pitched this unhinged concept - and for it to be greenlit no less - would be truly fascinating, for as much as turn-of-the-century wrestling fans loved their zany backstage brawls, at the expense of meat-and-potatoes squared circle action? This ain't it chief.
And the thing is, large swaths of gamers weren't chronically online back in 2000 as we all are today, and so many bought the game assuming that it would indeed still feature in-ring action. After all, the game's cover art didn't explicitly confirm that there wouldn't be any rings.
And so, many were left rather miffed when they popped the game into their PlayStation or Nintendo 64 and found such a limited, bare bones experience absolutely un-worthy of a full retail RRP.
It was a dirty trick on the part of biblical hucksters EA, yet it ultimately backfired as word-of-mouth spread quickly enough in conjunction with terrible reviews, such that it only sold a dire 200,000 copies.
