10 Darkest Quests In Fallout History

Nuking an entire town is only the tip of the iceberg...

The Fallout series has always revelled in a certain brand of humour. Although on the surface its post-apocalyptic nature would've been perfect for a horror game, since the very beginning, Black Isle Studios and later Bethesda have used its weird and wonderful setup to create one of the silliest and charming properties to ever grace the medium. However, that doesn't mean the horror tropes aren't still lurking in there somewhere. After all, this is the apocalypse we're talking about, and the series' laudable moral decisions don't always end with ghouls riding rockets to space, or a post-apocalyptic superhero reigning supreme over an entire town. Hell, you're essentially introduced to the third game with an option to nuke one of the series' major settlements - a reminder that this world can take a turn for the worst at any moment. That said, although spooky moments and sinister implications run rampant in every game in the franchise, some quests can simply chill you to the bone. Unlike the option to nuke Megaton as mentioned earlier, it's often the more personal choices or revelations that hit the hardest, making for some of the darkest moments in the entire franchise.

10. Pickman's Gallery (Fallout 4)

I thought I had seen all of the depraved things that Fallout 4 had to offer until I found Pickman's Gallery tucked away in the heart of the lower city. Seemingly innocuous from the outside, once you eliminate a couple of raiders and head inside, you'll quickly discover that there's more to this than first meets the eye. Because as it turns out, the titular Pickman has been torturing raiders and using their blood to craft cult-like paintings that are hung over every inch of the place. Through a series of notes littered throughout the location detailing the final moments of a group of raiders it becomes clear that Pickman takes more than a little pleasure in creating his art, and there might even be a supernatural reason for his actions. Not only that, if you let him go after the confrontation in the cellar, he'll create a personalised picture for your Vault Dweller, leaving behind a specialised knife so you can create your own works to hang on the walls of his home. Erm... thanks?
