10 Dated Video Game Clichés That Need To Die

2. "Get in there, Protagonist. Take out everybody on your own and we'll come meet you afterwards."

Capcom

We get it. We're the main character. We have to do all the hard graft. It's probably better that way, because main characters can die and re-spawn, right? And yet the rest of my team won't even attempt to help me? Can't you at least animate them to look as if they're trying to help me, programmers? Or story guys: why not make up a reasonable plot point as to why I'm having to invade base after base of highly-trained assassin soldiers on my own?

Yes, game protagonists are constantly forced by others characters to perform tasks such as "go inside and clear out the building so we can meet you," or "do all the work and we'll swing by afterwards to take the glory," and yet the justifications for making these solo missions are almost always absent. Of course, there's a reason for this to occur in gameplay terms (it's more badass to go in and wipe out a hive of enemies alone), but what about in narrative terms? If it wouldn't happen in a movie, it shouldn't happen in a video game. Besides, it's really scary, and we want some company, okay?
