10 Dated Video Game Clichés That Need To Die

1. "I have come to the conclusion that all doors are invincible."

For gamers everywhere, has there ever been anything more teeth-grindingly frustrating than a door? Think back to the days of retro entertainment, even: doors have been causing problems since The Legend of Ze,lda. And now that games have decided that we can have C4s and rocket launchers and grenades of every shape, colour and size, they've still not found an alternative replacement for the invincible door. Which is to say, every door in a video game is unaffected by weaponry.

Take a look at the door in the picture above: "Locked - Very Hard." Whether that's a cruel joke or a seriously misjudged attempt at humour, we're all thinking the same thing: anybody could climb through that door. Whether you're Mario or Gordon Freeman, that thing should not be blocking your path. And that goes for most doors - wooden, metallic, ice, whatever - that refuse to play fairly in video games: these things are completely unaffected by bullets, explosives, or a good kick in the hinges.

So though modern games might try to convince you that Russians are the enemy, we know who the real bad guys are. It's doors. It's always been doors.
