10 Dated Video Game Clichés That Need To Die

6. "Why do you have to make escorting you so hard?"

Rare

Escort missions aren't fun. They've never been fun. Generally speaking, they have a way of making players extremely nervous, and the A.I. has never raised itself a notch above "hellish." The big question: why are they so frustrating? Why is this part of any game always the worst?

The reason, of course, is that looking out for an A.I. character isn't enjoyable because - simply put - they're not a real person. They're too busy running into walls and getting caught in zombie hordes and making you feel bad for doing your best to consider the fact that, hey, this isn't actually a piece of cake, you know, and you're making it really hard.

Bring an actual friend into a game and have them play the escort and it's instantly better for two reasons. One: it's way better protecting a friend because you have an emotional attachment. Two: they don't mess your sh*t up at every possible turn. The fact that escort missions have a reputation for being so awful has become a cliché in itself. Developers need to rescue this mode of play or get rid of it. There's no reason why escorting a made-up character should be so draining. Playing a video game should just be fun, not emotionally damaging.
