10 Dead Video Game Characters You Can Actually Save

3. Schala - Chrono Cross

Though only appearing briefly in each game, Schala is the most important character in Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. Her mysterious magical anime girl powers are central to driving the narrative of each game. And with her story left unresolved in Chrono Trigger, it made sense that saving her became the main objective of Chrono Cross.

So it wasn't exactly that you didn't realize you could save Schala. It was more about the fact that doing so was an obtuse, partially luck-based process that you're barely clued into. It can only be done during the final boss fight and it can only be done by NOT beating the final boss.

Chrono Cross's unique combat system included a color-based grid that would change based on the element of magic used - use a fire spell, it turns red; a water spell, blue; and so on. It was a confusing system even in the easier fights.

When fighting the Time Devourer, you need to change this grid in a specific order. But the boss itself can (and will) also use spells, likely messing up this order. If you finally manage to get it right, you then have to go into your inventory and use a specific item. Now Schala is free and you never need to do that again!
