Assassin's Creed II not only introduced fans to series-best protagonist Ezio, but also gave him a potential love interest by way of Rosa, a thief who Ezio rescues. And despite her initially standoffish demeanour, Ezio eventually melts her icy heart.

During the game, their romantic potential is playfully hinted at, and it seemed self-evident that Rosa would have a recurring role in Ezio's second outing, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

As it turned out, Rosa was bafflingly absent to the surprise of legions of fans who were already busy shipping them, though the explanation behind her omission was ultimately quite the tragic one.

Lita Tresierra, the actress who voiced Rosa, was killed in a car crash shortly before Brotherhood went into production, and so Ubisoft decided to retire the character from the series rather than re-cast her.

It doesn't take much reading between the lines to appreciate that Rosa, who had quickly become a fan favourite in Assassin's Creed II, was meant for greater things and clearly supposed to have a large role in Brotherhood and beyond.

Sadly, real life intervened and ensured this was never realised.
