5. Brütal Legend
Brütal Legend - simultaneously the most and least deserving flop in video game history.
The least deserving because when Brütal Legend is on, it's on. The demo perfectly showcases the game's appeal - a combat-heavy action-adventure through a heavy metal inspired fantasy land populated by legends of the genre such as Ozzy Ozbourne and Lemmy. Yes sir, can we have another!
The most deserving because, at the halfway point, everything changes. Brütal Legend's back half largely eschews the God of War-style adventuring and instead transforms the game into a deeply flawed and frustrating RTS - a genre switch the demo conveniently neglects to include.
This was, in a word: dumb. In three words: so, so dumb. In 38 words: Double Fine, what the hell were you thinking? Were you dipping into Ozzy's stash during development? Because that's the only reason we can think of for switching to a genre wholly unsuited to the game you were making.
Wielding a flaming axe and fighting evil? That's heavy metal. Directing underlings and juggling resources? That's middle-management.
