10 Devastating Emotional Video Game Moments That Came Out Of Nowhere
8. Exploring The Attic - Gone Home
Gone Home is a deeply emotional game and does an excellent job handling misdirection. It's clear that as you adventure through the house, piecing together the story behind the Sam and Lonnie, that the game is ramping up to a big conclusion.
Every note you read hints towards the obvious and devastating outcome of Sam killing herself to spare her the pain of Lonnie leaving her. But when you enter the attic and find out that Sam and Lonnie ran away together - and are alive and happy - it's a sudden switch that rolls together the emotional impact of how you expected the story to go, ultimately delivering a more resonant conclusion.
Whilst not devastating, it certainly knocks you back a few paces and will leave you contemplating the story and it's personal implications for a fair while after. It's impactful and emotionally gut-wrenching, but for all the good reasons.
You literally have to recalibrate everything you thought Gone Home was trying to tell you, leaving that sense of mourning over the loss of your sister and being devastated, but with a core sensation of happiness at the core.
