When players muster up the energy to trek up to Winterhold for the College of Winterhold storyline in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, they will meet a Breton Mage called Mirabelle Ervine.

Mirabelle is the college's Master Wizard and acts as the bridge between the Archmage and the students. She gives players a tour of the grounds when they first arrive and is shown to be a competent mage as well as a knowledgeable and brave member of the college, making her one of the few colourful characters present in the storyline.

None of the guild leaders that kick off the game make it to the end of their questlines alive, but usually the characters around them are able to make it through unscathed. That's what makes Mirabelle's death so shocking.

After returning from Labyrinthian following The Staff of Magnus quest, players will be told by Tolfdir that Mirabelle had sacrificed herself in order to ensure the other students were able to get clear of the carnage caused by Ancano.

She cannot be saved or revived, and players aren't even given the option of seeing her body or picking up any souvenirs to remember her by.
