10 Disturbing Moments In Non-Horror Games
1. <span Style="font-size: 17.55px;">Shalebridge Cradle - </span>Thief: Deadly Shadows
A cradle usually has connotations of safety and comfort for a child or of a gentle hold. Shalebridge Cradle is the exact opposite. Dark and foreboding from its first appearance- its gothic architecture hides an even more disturbing interior.
Within the Thief series, the location is infamous for originally being an orphanage, before becoming an Asylum. These events did not occur separately though. Children and patients shared the space.
Incredibly enough, this did not end well. The staff were apparently cruel and callous when treating the patients and endangered the children under their supposed care. When Garret enters the Cradle, it has already been abandoned (by the living) due to arson committed by a pyromaniac imprisoned there.
The silence and darkness of the hallways only add to the sinister atmosphere, as the Cradle’s past is uncovered. This weighs heavily on the player’s mind throughout their exploration, as the will of the building becomes known.
Shalebridge Cradle is disturbing not only due to its past, but in its current state as a malevolent being with its own intentions. It refuses to let past and present inhabitants walk out freely, regardless of whether they are dead or alive.
