10 Disturbing Moments In Non-Horror Games
2. Nightmare Sequences - Max Payne
There are several sequences in Max Payne which deviate from the traditional formula of being a third-person shooter game. These events, which occur after Max has been compromised, reflect the same powerlessness from his past.
Focusing upon Max’s psychological trauma due to the brutal murders of his wife and baby - which he failed to prevent - these sequences spare no amount of uncomfortable details.
Featuring seemingly endless, repetitive corridors and disembodied voices, Max is caught in the maze of his past and has no choice, but to relive the events.
The music becomes a pounding heartbeat, as the player must carefully navigate thin trails of blood, in order to avoid being absorbed in the surrounding darkness. Bloodstained walls and screams indicate the horror of the scene.
A woman’s whimpers and a baby’s cries follow Max throughout the nightmares, though he is unable to stop them. These are interrupted by male voices and screaming, as well as tinkling chimes reminiscent of a baby’s lullaby.
The sequences continue grow physically darker as Max encounters a bloodstained cot and the walls become the same shade of crimson. Max and the player have no choice but to recount ever gory detail of the crime.
