10 Disturbing Moments In Non-Horror Games
3. Giygas Boss Fight - <span Style="font-size: 17.55px;">Earthbound</span>
In most RPGs, the player can seek refuge in being able to attack an enemy no matter how grotesque or difficult. Giygas is different. This convention is immediately shattered in that he is completely invulnerable to any form of attack.
Unlike other enemies within Earthbound, Giygas does not even have a sprite. It is the very background on which the battle takes place, implying that its scale and power cannot be comprehended.
The disturbing distorted graphics are only further emphasised by the discordant and unsettling music. This transforms from being eerie quiet, to static intensity at unexpected intervals.
Equally disturbing is the method which Giygas is defeated. It is only affected by prayer, an action even the player is encouraged to partake in.
A literal miracle is needed to defeat Giygas and despite the colourful and strange nature of Earthbound, this seems like a seeming impossibility. How can you defeat a being which has lost all sense of self and rational thought other than consisting of pure hatred and malice?
Giygas even threatens to destroy the very nature of reality through its existence. Suddenly, playing as four children against the very apocalypse seems an unimaginable burden to bear.
