10 Disturbing Video Game Characters We'll Never Forget

5. Monstro - The Binding Of Isaac: Afterbirth

Voldo SoulCalibur
Edmund McMillen, Florian Himsl

To be honest, practically any enemy or boss from the Binding of Isaac could have been included here, but Monstro is just slightly ahead of the game (and also literally a head).

One of the more frequently occurring bosses - insofar as that is possible in a Roguelike title - this disembodied, bouncing, smiling head is gruesome to behold and difficult to stomach.

This grinning countenance, with cleft-lip and missing teeth, will attempt to destroy Isaac using his wayward, disorganised tears, and by attempting to flatten him by bouncing around and jumping on him from unpredictable angles.

In gameplay terms, Monstro is not too difficult a boss to dispatch. His movements slow and predictable enough to avoid with relative ease, and his projectile tears not so strong as not to cause too much damage to little Isaac.

But it's that face which makes him such a horror, especially when he cracks that horrific, nothing going on behind the eyes, sadistic gummy smile.

Of all the many and varied enemies and enemy types in the Binding of Isaac, Monstro is the first which comes to mind long after you've turned the game off, and his is likewise the face you're most likely to see in your nightmares.
