8. Phantasmagoria - Sexual Abuse
Relatively unheard of by many modern gamers, Phantasmagoria was a "revolutionary" point-and-click game released back in 1995. If it wasn't renowned for being one of the first games to use live actors as characters within the gameplay, then it certainly was for its mature and controversial content (making it one of the earlier games to be banned in several countries). Depending on where players go and what they interact with, different live action cut scenes would be initiated throughout the game. Several of these cut scenes are particularly disturbing due to their over-the-top, graphic content (examples include a man forcing guts into a woman's mouth and a monster slowly ripping apart the lead character's head). The scene that seems to be most widely associated with the game's controversy is, however, the one in which the protagonist's husband becomes possessed and sexually assaults her. Many modern gamers may find it more ridiculous than disturbing, although the idea itself - of a possessed man abusing his wife in such a way - is less than pleasant.
