6. Silent Hill 2 - Pyramid Head
As one of the most famous and successful horror franchises in video game history, the Silent Hill series has had a great deal of disturbing moments. The enemies and bosses within the game are often deformed and bloody, with monsters from the earlier games still visually creepy enough to send a tingle down your spine. The creature known as 'Pyramid Head' is arguably the most famous of these monsters, with continuous reappearances throughout the series. Perhaps the most widely-discussed disturbing scene is that in which Pyramid Head makes his first appearance: Silent Hill 2. The player hides in a locker to avoid being spotted, with the majority of the cut scene then being shown from inside the locker (through the slits in the door). We witness Pyramid Head walk into view, a mysterious and intimidating humanoid with - quite obviously - a large, triangular, metal prism for a head. Although many gamers are now well associated with Pyramid Head's appearance, to those that were seeing him for the first time his presence was bound to be disturbing enough. However, it is what Pyramid Head is doing just before James (the protagonist) hides in the locker that seems most disturbing. The iconic foe is seen to be doing what can only be described as sexually assaulting mannequin-like creatures, naturally encouraging James to run and hide. The tension then builds as Pyramid Head draws his attention away from the mannequins and starts moving towards the locker. Whilst James is able to shoot his way out of the situation, the player is left in the knowledge that the creature they just encountered is still out there and not all that far away from them.
