10 Disturbing Video Game Secret Areas You Regret Finding

3. Ash Lake - Dark Souls

The entire point of Dark Souls is that it's obtuse as all hell, and nothing exemplifies that as much as hitting a tree in the depths of Blighttown to unlock not only one but two secret areas.

The first is the tree itself, which spirals downwards into the abyss and is packed with difficult enemies and precarious platforms that you absolutely will fall off about five times before you reach the bottom. It's a slog, but you've got to know what's down there.

Of course, this is Dark Souls, and it was never going to be a rainbow or a room full of unicorns.

Instead you come out the bottom of the tree to Ash Lake, easily one of the most imposing areas in the game. Essentially it's the deepest you can go, and it's little more than an expanse of nothingness.

Even worse, the first thing you see is a Hydra which, after fighting your way down and with no bonfire in sight, is enough to make you crap your own pants off.
