10 Dumb Video Game Mechanics We Should've Hated

5. The Whole Game Is An Escort Mission - BioShock Infinite

For the longest time, escort missions seemed like the one concept no video game could pull off. Even though Resident Evil 4 and GoldenEye 007 are synonymous with perfection, the escort sections can cause the calmest player to repeatedly drive their head into a wall.

That's why the gaming community collectively groaned when it was revealed BioShock Infinite would utilise this reviled mechanic. Actually, Infinite doesn't just include escort missions - the game is basically one big escort mission, since Elizabeth tags alongside our protagonist, Booker DeWitt for most of the playthrough.

However, Elizabeth is such a perfect partner, she never comes across as a burden or a plot-device. Because she holds her own during missions, she's seen as an equal. Due to her unique abilities, there are times where Booker relies on her more than his own skills.

Since she advances the story and her relationship with Booker is constantly developing, the player genuinely cares about her, rather than seeing her as a means to an end. Because this escort mission was executed so flawlessly, it's baffling how there've been so few games since that have nailed it half as well.
