10 Dumb Video Game Mechanics We Should've Hated
2. Vehicle Crafting - The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom
Since its inception, The Legend of Zelda has maintained a medieval vibe. Though the fantasy series has minor modern elements, characters rarely use anything more complex than a horse or cart for transport. (Except in Twilight Princess where Link could zip around on a dreidel.)
That's why it was surreal to hear Tears of the Kingdom lets Link construct cars, planes, boats, hovercrafts and everything in between. Although Breath of the Wild's DLC allowed the player to drive a motorcycle, bringing vehicles into the main campaign sounded... wrong.
And not just any regular vehicles. TOTK has Link driving a flame-throwing automobile that would feel more at home in Wacky Races. Alternatively, the Hero of Time can take to the sky in a makeshift rocket like Wile E. Coyote.
Also, the player has to make these zany automobiles themselves, which could prove tedious, imprecise, and convoluted. (Take it from Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts that inserting car-crafting this late in a franchise rarely pans out.)
But not only was this mechanic welcome, it's among the funnest parts in Tears of the Kingdom. On many occasions, the player is sure to abandon their quest altogether, purely to mess around with their creations for hours on end.
