Up until quite recently, Sony have always been known for taking some wild chances when it comes to marketing their flagship consoles and handhelds. But while this approach might have been worth the risk in the PS1 days, as the years drew on the daring ad campaigns quickly become more hassle than they were worth.
In particular, a God of War launch party that was documented in the official PlayStation magazine at the time drew plenty of unwanted attention around the release of the second game in the franchise.
Embracing the historical violence that the series was known for, the release party featured the sacrificing of a goat, with attendees being invited to perform a variety of "rituals" around the animal's dead carcass.
You can't pull something like this without the intention of riding the coattails of the backlash, but even then, I have no idea why Sony thought a dose of animal slaughter would get the audience ready to buy their product.
