3. Dark Souls III

Deus Ex may be an incredible bastion for sci-fi, but where fantasy is concerned you need look no further than Dark Souls; the unabashed king of sword n' sorcery RPGs.

For its third instalment, FromSoftware and creator Hidetaka Miyazaki noted it was the final entry in the series, electing to go out on a high-note with the most perfected combat yet, level designs that spiral and weave through one another and a bevy of references that tie the story directly into the original.

At this stage you probably know whether or not you're a 'Souls guy', but somehow, considering how hardcore and devoted the Souls community have become, Dark Souls III marks the perfect place to start, and to continue if you're already a fan.

Every single aspect of this finale is polished to a mirror sheen, to the degree where it forms an addictive gameplay loop of exploration and reward even the landmark original never achieved. Check out our full review here, and I'd say give Dark Souls III a chance even if you've put the series off so far.
