10 Emotionally-Draining Video Games You Only Finished Once
5. Gone Home
There aren't very many games like Gone Home - a title delivers a totally unique experience no matter how much time you've immersed in video games, but one that if you've played any number of shooters or horrors, will crawl into your subconscious like no other. Opening in first-person with no cutscene, you approach your character's family home after a long time away overseas - only to discover they're not there. Instead there's a note on the door from your sister alluding to something that's gone wrong, to which you'll then locate a key and head inside. The revelation of what's actually happening in Gone Home is pretty amazing, and although the reveal of where you sister actually is along with her actions and interests whilst you were away are key to why this resonated with so many critics last year, it's the playing on your fear tropes throughout that elevate it far above anything else. Witnessing the scene in the bathtub, having one of the lightbulbs pop when you least expect it or approaching the final loft-door with as much trepidation as if you were playing Outlast, Amnesia or Slender Man - these are the reactions developers Fullbright would only get from seasoned gamers, and when all's said and done the entirety of Gone Home comes together like no other.
