10 Emotionally Intense Video Games You Need To Experience
8. Silent Hill 2
The best games of the survival horror genre are capable of crippling you emotionally thanks to their ability to induce fear, but Silent Hill 2 raises the bar. While it is certainly terrifying, it also elicits feelings of guilt and sadness while you're running away from Pyramid Head. As discussed in 10 Times Silent Hill Was Absolutely Terrifying, the franchise has a penchant for building tension. At times, this tension leads to devastating jump scares; however, more often than not, absolutely nothing happens, and while this might sound like a relief, in actuality these uneventful scenes allow players to torment themselves via their own imaginations. Then the game will create a sense of confusion and loss that torments players beyond fright. For instance, Pyramid Head brutally murders potential love interest Maria, who reappears periodically only to be murdered again, and Rachel exposes James for his hypocrisy when he realizes he doesn't care enough about her to save her from suicide. Of course, most will remember the horrific twist at the end that reveals James is Marys true killer. The feelings of guilt that follow afterwards makes the game feel scarier when you realize that the town is actively trying to punish James, who is still a sympathetic character despite this, for his sins.
