10 Emotionally Intense Video Games You Need To Experience
9. Depression Quest
Unlike the other entries on this list, Zoe Quinns Depression Quest is not a traditional video game. Despite this, she accomplishes her goal of creating a text adventure that puts the player in the shoes of someone who suffers from depression. Depression Quest is like a choose your own adventure, providing you options for how you want to deal with your symptoms. The protagonist, on whom players can project their own lives (such as what they want their passion project, their soul crushing job, and significant other to be) is trusted with making those decisions in order to get by. It's easy to say that you should listen to your therapist and open up to your friends and family, and by doing so you'll receive a more positive ending. If, however, you choose the harder path, where you dont seek help and keep your troubles to yourself, things begin to fall apart. By going down this path, you eventually lose all but one choice - the one that allows you to continue to wallow in your depression - for each scenario, and you eventually lose your job and loved one in the process. Nothing about this game is fun in the traditional sense, and that's kind of the point.
