For protagonist James Sunderland, self-loathing takes on a very physical and threatening form to make his already unpleasant time in Silent Hill just that much more horrific.

Poor James is going through the wringer following the mysterious death of his wife, who, in an especially unfortunate development, he appears to have killed. Upon arriving in Silent Hill, Sunderland is subjected to the kind of psychological horror hijinks fans have come to expect and love from the series.

Pyramid Head's appearances in the game grow increasingly malevolent and violent as the player tumbles deeper down the narrative rabbit hole on offer. Initially silent and passive, each of his subsequent appearances show off his murderous, monstrous nature as he begins to stalk and terrorise Sunderland.

As the boss fights with the aptly named villain ramp up, the player can't help but feel slightly infuriated by Pyramid Head's ceaseless, unpredictable attacks. Accepting that Pyramid Head is in fact a manifestation of James' own inner guilt and turmoil helps the player to get into the protagonist's head even further.

In wanting to be rid of the twisted monster, we can connect further with James' own need to confront and be rid of his need for punishment. It's a stark, emotional journey into darkness, even as many players will want to smash in Pyramid Head's, well, pyramid head.
