On a quick glance, Obsidian Entertainment's Tyranny might look a lot like Pillars of Eternity and other classic isometric RPGs, but the world it takes place in is very different from most others.

As opposed to the "evil" path you might find in other games like Fallout or Mass Effect that offer moral choices, Tyranny's protagonist wields the power of evil overlord Kyros as one of their Fatebinders, who has systematically conquered the whole world over the last 400 years. Kyros dispatches you at the beginning of the game to quell a potential civil war between two factions of their forces.

Along the way, you will gain powers that will either allow you to function more effectively as a wing of Kyros' tyrannical empire, break away and aid the rebellion, or consolidate your own power to rule over the regions of Tiers as one of Kyros' Archons yourself. To reveal much of the plot would be to properly spoil why playing Tyranny is such an interesting and thoughtful exploration of what it means to be evil in gaming, but just know that whatever path through the game you do choose will still involve more than enough fighting, arguing and politicking to satisfy any would-be despot.
