10 EXACT Moments That Made Great Video Games Even Better
8. Meeting Solaire - Dark Souls (2011)
Famous for its unrelenting difficulty, Dark Souls wasted absolutely no time in throwing us into the deep end. After having only minutes to familiarise ourselves with the controls, the developers (quite literally) drop the first main boss upon us in the form of The Asylum Demon. And after finally defeating them, we then have the pleasure of etching our way through The Undeadburg.
Filled with plenty of ambushes, traps, a dragon, and another boss, the first main area of the game will put fresh players’ skills to the test as they work their way to the top of the belltower to ring the first bell.
Just when it looks like the situation is completely hopeless, however, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. That light is, of course, Solaire of Astora.
Found on a balcony overlooking the first glimpse of sunlight in the game, his infectious laugh and invitation for jolly cooperation is a much-needed warm welcome.
Solaire is more than a friendly face, though. His symbolic connection to sunlight makes him a small beacon of hope within the gloomy world of Lordran. He’s the manifestation of the perseverance Dark Souls encourages us to have.
