Though there’s a plethora of outstanding moments in both Red Dead Redemption and its prequel which cements them as some of the most exquisite pieces of storytelling and worldbuilding Rockstar have ever conceived, there’s one point in Red Dead Redemption which stans out as a definitive moment in the series. That's when John rode into Mexico.

Up until this point, outlaw-turned-rancher John Marston has been hunting down former gang members for the Pinkertons in a bid to turn his life around.

During the first main portion of the game, the backdrop of John’s quest is the dusty small towns and picturesque canyons of New Austin. But when his journey requires him to cross the river into Mexico, we're treated to an exhilarating set-piece before witnessing a moment we'll never forget.

When John mounts his horse after completing the crossing, the soundscape is overtaken by the melancholic tones of Jose Gonzales’ “Far Away”. Being the first time that a song appears in the soundtrack, its arrival takes us by surprise and signals the significance of this point in John's quest.

As we absorb the new scenery to the sombre melody, we're invited to reflect upon our journey so far and what lies ahead.
