10 EXACT Moments Video Games Gave Us The ICK
7. "Police Brutality, Comin' Up!" - Mortal Kombat 9
Now to be clear, 2011 was a very different time and we've come a long way as a society since then, but that doesn't much change how utterly wince-inducing Stryker's introductory animation is in Mortal Kombat 9.
Stryker is a riot police officer who, at the start of a fight, fires his gun into the air and proudly shouts, "Police brutality, comin' up!"
The line was clearly intended to sound badass, but given the very real problems with police brutality in America that have existed for literally decades, it comes off as howlingly tone-deaf - even in a series as infamous for its lack of taste as Mortal Kombat.
And indeed, far away from the gnarly fatalities, it was a single line of dialogue which proved most offensive for many playing the game.
The one-liner even went viral online, with some players posting clips of Stryker uttering the dialogue before fighting Jax, a Black fighter, the implications of which are obviously even worse.
Per the backlash, it's not terribly surprising that Stryker hasn't appeared as a playable fighter in any Mortal Kombat game since, and though he could theoretically get reworked to reflect modern attitudes to policing, it's probably not worth the headache the inevitable discourse will produce.
