When it comes to plotlines driven by important deaths (often father figures), you don't get many franchises that use the trope more than Yakuza. As such, to see this happen again in the seventh entry wasn't exactly shocking.

After all, Like a Dragon starts with flashbacks that show crime lord Masumi Arakawa seeking revenge for the murder of his father... which is exactly where protagonist Ichiban Kasuga's storyline is headed.

At the very least, the game holds out on this for a good length of time. Instead, the game is driven by the apparent betrayal of Kasuga at the hands of his beloved leader Arakawa. Being an abandoned orphan, Arakawa is the closest Kasuga has ever had to Father and will do anything for him - quite literally including 18 years of jail-time.

As the game's final act begins, the two are reunited and share a long scene together where Ichiban continues to devote himself to Arakawa despite being told that he was lied to about why exactly he took the fall. The latter eludes to some pretty major considerations that the "figure" in "father figure" may well be superfluous. Ichiban's passion that they can finally reconnect against Arakawa's defeated demeanour spells out storyline disaster.

Sure enough, shocking no one, Ichiban awakes to find Arakawa has been assassinated... and the cycle continues.
