7. The Mannequin Dolls - Devotion

Red Candle Games

Most people can agree that certain things are monstrously creepy, no matter what. Spiders? Check! Clowns? Check! Emotionless dolls? Oh boy, give them a check!

When it comes to implementing creepy mannequin-style dolls into gameplay, you'd be hard-pressed to find anything better than this segment in Red Candle Games' Devotion. This Taiwanese studio really went above and beyond to make you want to quit with this one.

Devotion puts you in the shoes of a troubled man wandering around his family home, with the story being slowly unveiled through exploration and puzzle-solving. In one section of the game, you are greeted by a room full of uncanny dolls, and you just know they're going to move.

As you look about the place, you'll slowly notice that these abominations have a habit of moving while you're not looking. This leads to constant terror as you have to walk around them, always fearing that they might just get you while you're not looking. It's a masterclass in tension.

This kind of scare is hardly original, but it's done so well in this brilliant game.
