10 Exceptional First-Person Shooter Games That Defined The Last 10 Years

6. Gears of War

The first in the epic trilogy, Gears of War is a badass shooting game that throws you into the fire during an epic war against the Locust. You play as badass Marcus Fenix, the only man who's capable of stopping the on-going alien invasion. A once imprisoned traitor, Marcus and his team set out to eliminate the Locust, killing as many bad guys and monsters as possible along the way. Of course, the game also comes with an array of badass weapons, guns, grenades, and - most notably - a chainsaw attached to a gun. Easily the funnest way to kill someone, the chainsaw kill also comes with killer sound effects. Reloading a weapon has never been so exhilarating (I'm guessing you've never said that about an FPS before - I know I haven't). The graphics are great, as is the campaign and story in general. The writing is also masterful, as the characters really come to life with the all the Hollywood-standard voice-over work. If you're an online gamer, you won't be disappointed. The highlight of the game for me was the ability to play the campaign with a friend, via Xbox live or a split screen. If by chance they're holding you back, you can choose to ditch your friends and continue the campaign from where you last left off, which was a handy touch. Gears of War was the first of three games, you'll know, but it's the first one that sets the precedent for the pace of the follow-ups. Gears of War is a must for any gaming fan looking for a challenge and a good time. Addiction is sure to follow.
