10 Extreme Moments Where Video Game Fans Took Things Too Far

9. DMC's 2013 Controversy

Instead of Capcom developing Devil May Cry in 2013, it was given to UK-based Ninja Theory, who chose to reboot the series and take it in a different, more modern direction. When it came to showing off what they'd been working on, saying fans were "angry" was an understatement.

Any changes to a popular character are going to be met with controversy, but few were met with such rage as DMC's new Dante. This version was like a rebellious teenager, intended to appeal to a younger demographic, but the most telling change was the throwing out of his iconic white hair and campy attitude.

Unfortunately, a firestorm kicked up over the new version of the character with many fans angrily attacking both the developer and the Italian artist Alessandro Taini. The game itself was far from a letdown, but the anger surrounding the character at its centre ended up being blown way out of proportion.

It got so bad that Ninja Theory and Capcom would stay away from the franchise for six years, until they finally returned with Devil May Cry 5, wiping DmC from the canon altogether.

Most agreed it was a welcome return to form, but 2013's edition was never given a chance.
