From its announcement in late 2013, there was a huge amount of excitement behind No Man's Sky, and it ended up going too far.

It's hard to argue that the mainstream gaming press didn't contribute to the overzealous anticipation, and this started to show as game director Sean Murray found himself looking incredibly awkward when talking about the title's features. Some of the blame lies with him, as after all, he did tell many fibs about what you could do in the game, but what came next was just as shocking.

When No Man's Sky arrived, gamers were livid at how shallow the finished item was. Many of the features discussed by Murray were absent in the final product, leaving him to be bombarded by death threats for failing to deliver a game that lived up to the promises.

This prompted him and the Hello Games team to go radio silent for a whole year.

Despite its initial failure in the eyes of consumers everywhere, No Man's Sky has managed to pull itself back. Hello Games knew that action spoke far louder that issuing statements to the community, and they set about working hard to improve the game.

It's now a fully-featured product that is widely enjoyed by a thriving community, with yet more updates still to come next generation.
