10 Failed PS2 Games That Became Cult Classics

5. Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne

Atlus

Atlus has had a helluva time getting anyone in the west to give a damn about their games. Sure, they've gotten it pretty down pat nowadays, but the mid to late-2000s was ROUGH for them, barely reaching above cult status.

But while the Persona series was slowly picking up steam with the one-two punch of 3 and 4, the series that built Atlus - Shin Megami Tensei - has only very recently seen any success here in the west. The closest they got before this was the legendary cult classic JRPG SMT: Nocturne.

Nocturne's difficulty is notorious for making Dark Souls look like a game starring the Smurfs, as it has no patience, no mercy, and no regrets. The RNG is absolutely what keeps it from the mainstream, on top of some archaic dungeon design and an incredibly dense plot.

However, if none of that sounds like a problem for you, then you'll find Nocturne to be one of the most satisfying-to-master games ever made.
