10 Failed Video Games That Had So Much More Potential
4. The Order: 1886
The Order: 1886 was shaping up to be an intriguing title, and a tempting exclusive for PlayStation 4 (current-gen consoles have struggled a little with killer apps, especially earlier on).
The concept, after all, is certainly unique: the Knights of the Round Table fight enemies such as vampires in the skewed historical setting of 1886 steampunk London. Now that’s a setup that demands attention.
As we’ve already mentioned, though, radical departures from the norm are a real risk in the gaming industry. This super creative concept, then, was let down by gameplay that felt very, very familiar.
As with Umbrella Corps, this title proved to be quite a generic shooting experience, with quicktime events (and everybody loves those) thrown in a little too frequently. In terms of presentation, The Order: 1886 looks fantastic, but it’s quite short and seems to have been shooting for style over substance. So much more could have been done with this unique premise.
