10 Famous Gaming 'Villains' You Didn't Realise Were Heroes

1. The Helghast

Game: Killzone series At first glance, the Helghast are the most archetypical villainous force in all of gaming. They wear terrifying gas masks, have glowing red eyes, and want to rule over the planet Vekta. They're essentially Space Nazis. If you delve into the story though, the Helghast morality isn't quite as clear cut as it first seems. They are descended from humans that were part of the Helghan Corporation, until the ruling body of Earth, the UCN, decided they were a potential threat, imposing heavy taxes and regulations on the corporation. Because of this, Helghan declared itself as independent, prompting the UCN to attack and drive them to the harsh planet later named Helghan. The planet of Helghan was already harsh enough to require everyone to wear protective gear, but it was made worse by the UCN imposing embargoes on the entire planet, essentially leaving them for dead. With all this in mind, it's understandable that the Helghast became a bit annoyed at the supposed good guys of the story.
