2. The Aliens

Game: Half-Life In this case, the aliens aren't really the heroes, but there's absolutely no reason they should be considered villains. As you play through Valve's Half-Life for the first time, there doesn't seem to be much question about it: they're attacking you on sight, so you have to fight back with deadly force. Once the game's over with though, you start to realise. The resonance cascade actually dropped the alien species into this strange new planet without them knowing what the hell is going on. They aren't attacking Freeman as part of some nefarious, organised plot or out of a bloody desire for death. These are confused creatures that have seen their kind being killed by the weird-looking humans before. The Vortigaunts are being controlled by Combine collars, while others just (rightly) think they're fighting for their lives when a bespectacled man wielding a crowbar comes charging at them.
