1. Aeris/Tifa/Rinoa/Garnett/Yuna (Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, X)
Whenever we put together any emotional-hook-centred list there's a few hugely affecting moments in gaming history that scream to be included. One of which when it comes to anything relationship-wise is that of Aeris' portrayal in Final Fantasy VII, a suitably game-changing character that truly made us realise how much we cared when she was taken away near the close of the game. It's not just Aeris though - even Tifa in the same game might have appealed to you more - there's just something so endlessly compelling about the way Square used to write their female characters. It's rare you'll come across someone who'll state part eight was their favourite, but as love-interest Rinoa was a part of that game's logo you knew she was going to be important. Add in FF IX's Princess Garnett who with the game's minimalist art style comes across as incredibly cute, yet the narrative compels her to break away from being an over-spoilt rich kid into someone far more noble and independent. Then there's Yuna; who if you believe certain fan theories is actually the real protagonist of part ten, a kind-hearted soul who does her very best to look after the entire party throughout, as well as helping form one of the most talked-about relationships in gaming history with Tidus.
