10 Final Fantasy Characters Who Almost Ruined Their Own Games

1. Yuffie (Final Fantasy VII)

Optional characters have it tough in the world of role-playing games. Due to their optional status, they very rarely get involved in major plot events and their own storylines may be significantly worse than others in the game. Yuffie may be an optional acquisition in Final Fantasy VII and that's perhaps for the best; if you knew the trouble she was going to cause you, in hindsight, you might have turned her away. Yuffie first appears as a random encounter on the world map in a forest region (the earliest possible location is just outside Junon Harbour). After battling her, you're transported to an open field where you have to pick the correct responses to her questions in order to get her to join you. If you so much as open a menu or try to save at the nearby save point, she will rob you and leave; apparently she has little worries about making a good first impression. If you have Yuffie in the party, she'll make a few humorous appearances throughout (such as when she gets a job at a Materia store part-time, only to rob them when leaving with the party) with little to offend. Yuffie comes to the fore when the party arrives in her home nation of Wutai. Here, she leaves the party temporarily, taking the group's Materia stash with her. This leads to one of the game's most frustrating segments; with no Materia (and therefore no magic), the fights in Wutai become much tougher and it's impossible to leave without finishing the storyline, which involves chasing Yuffie all over the place. Great. For the majority of the game, Yuffie is an inoffensive yet unimportant character. She appears in several scenes and has some funny lines but apart from that, she doesn't do a lot (she doesn't even appear in the game's closing FMV). Her storyline in Wutai is a chore though and while it's optional, you'll undoubtedly find yourself stumbling upon it during your search for the Temple Of The Ancients. Here, Yuffie's annoying qualities come to light and it's hard for her to regain our trust after putting us through such a grueling, testing time. I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
