10 Final Fantasy Characters Who Almost Ruined Their Own Games

10. Umaro (Final Fantasy VI)

Interestingly, Final Fantasy VI was created with no main protagonist in mind; it's characters form more of an ensemble than any other Final Fantasy game. As such, there's a range of creative characters with many optional choices that can be missed entirely (especially when in the World of Ruin where rediscovering certain characters is optional). Of course, when you're introducing a wide range of characters, not all of them are going to be hits. Umaro is a remarkably strange choice for a playable character, even by Final Fantasy standards. He's a berserker yeti who doesn't take any commands from the player; he simply uses physical attacks and generally does whatever he wants. Not exactly the sort of party member you want around when the going gets tough. Even stranger is the way you recruit him into the party. In the World of Ruin, Umaro is encountered in a mine and after a battle, if Mog is in your party, the Moogle will command Umaro to join you; apparently Mog knows how to control him. It's a bizarre partnership to say the least; so bizarre in fact that when held up against the more mature storylines in Final Fantasy VI, it kind of falls apart. There's various ways to get the most out of Umaro in battle but with little story and character, when all is said and done, one question really remains about Umaro - why?

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
