10 Forgotten Pieces Of Gaming Tech
3. Sega Activator
In the early '90s, Sega were working on a Virtual Reality system that was apparently too realistic, so they scrapped it and instead released a motion controller in 1993. But, unlike Nintendo with a silly glove, Sega instead opted for an octagonal ring that you would stand in. The ring would then use infra-red beams to interpret player movement.
The fighting game genre was about to experience something unlike anything before. Except, of course it wouldn’t because fighting games are about reaction times and pushing a button is infinitely faster than flailing about desperately in seventeen directions to try and do a Hadouken. And unsurprisingly the device was terrible at detecting the user’s movements and it also didn’t work if you didn’t have a flat ceiling. But still, probably about as good as Nintendo’s Power Glove.
