10 Forgotten WWE Match Types That Need To Return

9. Casket Match

Unlike most of these stipulations, we’ve seen a casket match as recently as 2018, but for one simple reason there’s been no talk of the gimmick since. That reason? The retirement of The Undertaker, the man who, fittingly, took part in 84% of the themed bouts, winning more often than not.

The casket match has a few things going for it. The visuals, done right, are nicely macabre, and if the wrestlers can sell the genuine spookiness of being shoved in a coffin, you’re halfway there. There’s a neat simplicity that’s missing from an ambulance or stretcher match, where the consequences of being stretchered or driven off to… somewhere are far from clear.

There are also some casket bouts of genuine quality in wrestling history -‘Taker vs Michaels, ‘Taker vs Randy and Daddy Orton - with the casket proving a good prop for wrestling hijinks (or in the case of Michaels an obstacle on which to almost irreparably damage your spine).

WWE is a little bereft of spooky characters at present after 2021’s cuts, but perhaps that leaves the stage set for a debuting demon to make the match type his or her own. Or you could do Shayna Baszler vs Alexa Bliss’ doll, if you wanted.
