How often can you say a game looks like Okami, plays like Maximo and covers a story rooted in Judaism?

Step forward El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron, an ambitious title from a team assembled of Devil May Cry, Okami and err, Fatal Frame veterans.

Even if you didn't know your ancient Hebrew scriptures, the storytelling and visuals on display here are so beautiful that even the most stubborn agnostic will be on board.

The combat itself is equally impressive, with an armour system that breaks on contact over time (hence the Maximo reference), it added challenge on par with Bayonetta and the like.

If you've ever played and enjoyed Furi, then you'll see a similarity in El Shaddai: the beauty in the minimal yet bright aesthetic. The desire to captivate with less, not overwhelm with an Uncharted level of graphical fidelity and mise en scene.

It received positive acclaim on release... and that was about it, bar a spin-off of sorts on the Vita. Of course, it's not really a game that could be franchised on, but as a standalone title it's definitely worth checking out.
